How Does Asset Tracking Work?

Asset Tracking and Remote Monitoring

Asset tracking and remote monitoring is fast becoming a critical element in asset management for many commercial applications, enabling businesses and government entities to track assets that are remotely located, on a near real-time basis.

Here's How Asset Tracking Works

A satellite modem is attached to the asset to be tracked, such as trucks, ships, barges, containers, machinery, mining equipment-any mobile asset. Through Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites-such as OrbComm and GlobalStars satellite networks-servers receive incoming data from the satellites regarding real-time position and status. This two-way communication system enables customers and end users to track and monitor fixed and mobile assets anywhere in the world.

These incoming messages need to be sorted, parsed, and stored in a database. That's where Wildcat Systems comes in. Our proprietary series of software applications enables value added resellers to offer fully functional and completely integrated asset tracking and remote monitoring services to their customers. With our software technologies and technical support, customers can log into a web-based application that uses the Microsoft Virtual Earth application platform to view all their asset location data. Wildcat Systems can also integrate into customers systems through the use of web services and EDI interfaces to allow the end user to download their data directly into systems such as ERP and in-house logistics applications.

Remote Monitoring

This same technology is utilized in the remote monitoring of widely dispersed fixed assets. It provides a means of collecting information from these assets to monitor productivity and activity, reduce personnel costs required for routine on-site monitoring visits, and minimize downtime, thereby increasing bottom-line profit margins. From meter reading and pipeline monitoring to oil, gas and chemical storage tank monitoring and maintenance information, the applications for remote monitoring have only begun to be realized.

Remote monitoring can include:

  • Diagnostic Monitoring
  • Automated meter reading
  • Fluid and flow monitoring
  • Unit diagnostic and maintenance reports
  • System control
  • Emergency notification
  • Gas and oil extraction rates
  • Storage monitoring
  • Utility appliance usage control
  • Regulation compliance

Both asset tracking and remote monitoring have applications for local, state and federal governments, including utility consumption, emergency preparedness, military logistical support, monitoring environmental conditions, and managing disaster relief supplies.

Dual Mode Asset Tracking and Remote Monitoring

Dual mode asset tracking and remote monitoring systems take advantage of both satellite and cellular technologies, switching back and forth to provide the most cost-efficient asset tracking solution, depending on asset location at any given time.
